Ann Henry-Smith

Started quilting when I had to retire early, due to arthritis. Got involved with a newly set up group, then learnt about a city and guilds course. So I started at Cheltenham college, with Tutor Di Wells. On my first day I informed the 'class' that I could not draw and anyway I was only interested in traditional quilting !! Well I soon learnt otherwise, and what a wonderful world was opened up for me. So then after about 6 months I joined the quilters guild having been assured it was not just for experts! Life has just been one long quilting adventure ever since.
Between doing the first and second part of City and Guild I had a gap year, so in an endeavour to improve my skills at 'vermicelli' quilting I did a one year course of machine embroidery. As you will see I am a slow learner, mostly jumping to the wrong conclusion!!!!!
I had a wonderful time in Region 5 before I moved to Wales. Now I have a continuing busy, fun time living in Brecon, still learning, and attending workshops as they are available. Enjoying doing a bit within my region. I have had so much fun from being in The Guild, it extends my life by enabling me to help within my region.
Whilst at college our 'class' arranged an exhibition at Westonbirt Arboretum. At The end of our time at college we held another exhibition in Cheltenham in a new gallery.(the name I am sorry to say has gone from my mind). Following that, we had kept in touch with each other and met monthly in an effort to continue to stretch our abilities. So we arranged an exhibition in The Subscription Rooms in Stroud. Each one I enjoyed, but of course then I had to move to Wales, and I could not manage the travelling all the time.
So in 2010 after hearing The Dean speak about a sculpture exhibition he had visited in Gloucester Cathedral. I asked if perhaps we could have a textile/quilt exhibition at Brecon Cathedral. So we held our first exhibition in 2011. Again lots of fun in the main. So now we meet up as a relatively local group once a month, we have been building a body of work to show at our 2nd show this year in The Cathedral at Brecon.
